SCHIAVA 'HOAMET' BERGMANNHOF 2021 DESCRIPTION

The Schiava 'Hoamet' from the South Tyrolean Bergmannhof estate is an elegant and characteristic interpretation of this important native black grape variety. The curious name of this grape derives from the vine-training method popular in the Middle Ages, which consisted of cultivating the plant by tying it to a stake in order to support its growth, controlling its form and production. From this system originated the expression 'enslaved vine', hence 'Schiava'. It is precisely from the Middle Ages that the first evidence of the vine, which has always been strongly loved by South Tyroleans, dates back.

'Hoamet' Schiava Bergmannhof is produced from a solid base of Schiava grapes combined with 5% Lagrein, varieties cultivated in the area of San Paolo, a hamlet of the municipality of Appiano sulla Strada del Vino. The vines, which are 20 years old, are sustainably grown on gravelly, clay and limestone soils with very stony sections. Towards the end of September, the grapes are harvested by hand, some of which are then placed in open wooden tonneaux. In these containers, spontaneous alcoholic fermentation takes place, combined with 20 days of maceration on the skins, followed by complete malolactic fermentation. Ageing takes place in oak tonneaux, on the fine lees for 18 months, and the wine is finally bottled without undergoing any clarification or filtration.

The South Tyrolean Schiava 'Hoamet' wine from Bergmannhof has a bright ruby red colour with good transparency. The refined bouquet is described by fruity aromas of plum and cherry that blend with delicate hints of elderberry, as well as spicy hints of black pepper and coffee. The progression on the palate is intense yet velvety, with great freshness and balance, and fine tannins anticipating the deep aromatic persistence.
